"Matthew Shepard" Song

Yesterday I received an e-mail from Alan Edwards,  at the Appleseed Recordings folk label. The e-mail stated:

I'm writing to make you aware of a CD called "Fields of Promise" by singer-songwriter Dave Crossland that we issued in late August of this year. On this CD is Dave's song "Matthew Shepard," presented in two versions, acoustic and electric.

The lyrics:
"Newspaper cries and the radio dies and the video streams through my head/
Crosses still burn and the swastikas turn and a young man is better off dead,
better  off dead

(chorus):
Where is the love? Where is the love? Where is the love that you promised to
me?
Where is the love? Where is the love? Where is the love that you promised to
me?

Lashed to a fence, you were beaten and left for the wind to batter you down/
Straw effigies and the shouts in the streets on the morning they lowered you
down in     the cold, cold ground

(chorus)

I remember the bonfires and the marches in the rain, and I remember the
gentle  words and the songs you used to sing/
And I remember the soldier standing straight as an arrow, and I remember the
flower  that you put in his gun barrel/
And I remember the strange fruit hanging from the tree, and I remember the
flesh and   blood where your hands used to be/
And I heard the train whistle wailing through the night, and I saw the ashes
fall like   snow in July/
And I saw the lions feast before the cheering crowds, and I saw the blood
come    trickling down from the thorns in your crown.

Where is the love? Where is the love? Where is the love that you promised to
me?
Where is the love? Where is the love? Where is the love that you promised to
me?"
